Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Registration and Licensing) (Amendment No. 2) Rules 1997

In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 34 and 140 of the Road Traffic Act, the Minister for Communications hereby makes the following Rules:

Citation and commencement

1. These Rules may be cited as the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Registration and Licensing) (Amendment No. 2) Rules 1997 and shall come into operation on 15th August 1997.

Amendment of rule 2

2. Rule 2(1) of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Registration and Licensing) Rules (R 5) (referred to in these Rules as the principal Rules) is amended —

(a)

by inserting, immediately before the definition of “category (h) certificate of entitlement”, the following definition:

“ “car-sharing co-operative” means a co-operative society (not being a business connected with the manufacturer, sale or dealership of motor vehicles) which is registered under the Co-operative Societies Act (Cap. 62) and which has as its object the purchase of vehicles for the shared use of its members and affillates for their business, social or domestic purposes;”;

(b)

by deleting the word “or” at the end of sub-paragraph (a) of the definition of “private motor car”;

(c)

by deleting the comma at the end of sub-paragraph (b) of the definition of “private motor car” and substituting the word “; or”, and by inserting immediately thereafter the following sub-paragraph:

“(c)	a car-sharing co-operative,”.

Amendment of rule 3

3. Rule 3 of the principal Rules is amended by inserting, immediately after paragraph (5), the following paragraph:

“(6) The Registrar may register a motor car in the name of a car-sharing co-operative subject to such terms and conditions as he thinks fit.”.

Amendment of Third Schedule

4. The Third Schedule to the principal Rules is amended by inserting, immediately after the words “private individuals” wherever they appear in the second column under the heading “Type of Vehicles”, the words “and car-sharing co-operatives”.
