Road Traffic Act
(Chapter 276)
Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) (Amendment) Rules 1998
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, the Land Transport Authority of Singapore hereby makes the following Rules:
Citation and commencement
1.  These Rules may be cited as the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) (Amendment) Rules 1998 and shall come into operation on 1st April 1998.
Amendment of rule 36
2.  Rule 36 of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) Rules (R 9) (referred to in these Rules as the principal Rules) is amended —
(a)by deleting the words “(with passengers only, or with goods-cum-passengers)” in paragraph (1)(b) and substituting the words “(with passengers only), a goods-cum-passengers vehicle”; and
(b)by deleting paragraph 2 and substituting the following paragraph:
(2)  For the purposes of paragraph (1) —
“light goods vehicle” means —
(a)a goods vehicle the maximum laden weight of which does not exceed 3.0 metric tons which is registered using a certificate of entitlement issued before 1st April 1998; or
(b)a goods vehicle the maximum laden weight of which does not exceed 3.5 metric tons which is registered using a certificate of entitlement issued on or after 1st April 1998,
but does not include any construction equipment, engineering plant, recovery vehicle, vehicle used as a mobile canteen or mobile bank and a vehicle used for a specific purpose such as a horse float.”.
Amendment of rule 51
3.  Rule 51 of the principal Rules is amended by deleting paragraph (4) and substituting the following paragraph:
(4)  This rule shall apply to —
(a)any goods vehicle which has an open deck for the carriage of goods and a maximum laden weight of not more than 3,000 kilogrammes and which is registered using a certificate of entitlement before 1st April 1998; or
(b)any goods vehicle which has an open deck for the carriage of goods and a maximum laden weight of not more than 3,500 kilogrammes and which is registered using a certificate of entitlement on or after 1st April 1998.”.
Amendment of rule 114
4.  Rule 114 of the principal Rules is amended by deleting paragraph (4) and substituting the following paragraph:
(4)  For the purposes of paragraph (1) —
“light goods vehicle” means —
(a)a goods vehicle the maximum laden weight of which does not exceed 3.0 metric tons which is registered using a certificate of entitlement issued before 1st April 1998;
(b)a goods vehicle the maximum laden weight of which does not exceed 3.5 metric tons which is registered using a certificate of entitlement issued on or after 1st April 1998,
but does not include any construction equipment, engineering plant, trivan, motor cycle with a side-car attached to it, recovery vehicle, vehicle used as a mobile canteen or mobile bank, a goods-cum-passengers vehicle, and a vehicle used for a specific purpose such as a horse float.”.
