(Qualified Persons)
(Amendment) Rules 2020
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(2) of the Legal Profession Act, the Minister for Law, after consulting the Board of Directors of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education, makes the following Rules:
Citation and commencement
1.  These Rules are the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) (Amendment) Rules 2020 and come into operation on 1 July 2020.
New rule 5AA
2.  The Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules (R 15) (called in these Rules the principal Rules) are amended by inserting, immediately after rule 5, the following rule:
Persons admitted as candidates for degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence by National University of Singapore
5AA.  Any person admitted as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence by the National University of Singapore is a qualified person if the person —
(a)has passed the final examination for that degree; and
(b)has attained at least a Merit in relation to that degree.”.
Amendment of rule 11
3.  Rule 11(4) of the principal Rules is amended by inserting, immediately after the words “Bachelor of Laws” in sub‑paragraph (b)(ii), the words “or degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence”.
Amendment of rule 16
4.  Rule 16 of the principal Rules is amended by deleting paragraph (1) and substituting the following paragraph:
(1)  Upon an application made to the Minister by any person mentioned in rule 5, 5AA, 5A or 6, the Minister may, after consulting the Institute, exempt the person from the requirement under rule 5(b), 5AA(b), 5A(1)(b) or 6(1)(b), as the case may be.”.
