PART I
SHORT TITLE AND APPLICATION
Short title
1.  This Act may be cited as the Factories Act.
General application of this Act
2.  Except as in this Act otherwise expressly provided, the provisions of this Act shall apply only to factories as defined by this Act, but shall, except where the contrary intention appears, apply to all such factories.
Application to factories belonging to Government
3.  This Act applies to factories belonging to or in the occupation of the Government and to premises in which building operations and works of engineering construction are carried on by or on behalf of the Government.
Power to exempt in case of public emergency
4.  In the case of any public emergency or whenever the interests of public security or the security of the Singapore Armed Forces require, the President may, by order to be published in the Gazette, to the extent and during the period named in the order, exempt from this Act either factories generally or any class or description of factories.
Power to exempt
5.  The Minister may by order to be published in the Gazette exempt any class or description of factory from any of the provisions of Parts IV, V, VI and VII.
