An Act to make new provision in respect of copyright and related matters, and to repeal the United Kingdom Copyright Act 1911, the Copyright Act (Chapter 187 of the Revised Edition) and the Copyright (Gramophone Records and Government Broadcasting) Act (Chapter 188 of the Revised Edition) and to make a consequential amendment to the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation Act 1979 (No. 33 of 1979); and for purposes connected with the matters aforesaid.
Be it enacted by the President with the advice and consent of the Parliament of Singapore, as follows:
PART I
PRELIMINARY
Short title and commencement
1.—(1)  This Act may be cited as the Copyright Act 1987 and shall come into operation on such date as the Minister may, by notification in the Gazette, appoint.
(2)  The Minister may appoint different dates for the coming into operation of the different provisions of this Act.
Application
2.  Except insofar as Part XI otherwise expressly provides, this Act shall apply in relation to things existing on 10th April 1987 in like manner as it applies in relation to things coming into existence after that date.

Application to Government
3.  Subject to Part X, this Act shall bind the Government but nothing in this Act shall render the Government liable to be prosecuted for an offence.
Copyright not to subsist except by virtue of this Act
4.  Subject to the provisions of this Act, no copyright shall subsist otherwise than by virtue of this Act.
Savings of rights of the Government, etc
5.  Nothing in this Act shall affect any right or privilege of the Government or any other person under any other written law, except insofar as that law is expressly repealed, amended or modified by this Act.
Operation of other laws
6.  Nothing in this Act shall affect the operation of the law relating to breaches of trust or confidence.
