An Act to amend the Education Act (Chapter 87 of the 1985 Revised Edition) and to make consequential amendments to other written law.
Be it enacted by the President with the advice and consent of the Parliament of Singapore, as follows:
Short title and commencement
1.  This Act may be cited as the Education (Amendment) Act 1997 and shall come into operation on such date as the Minister may, by notification in the Gazette, appoint.
Amendment of section 2
2.  Section 2 of the Education Act is amended by deleting the definition of “Director” and substituting the following definition:
“ “Director-General” means the Director-General of Education;”.

Consequential amendments
3.—(1)  The Education Act is amended by deleting the word “Director” wherever it appears in the following provisions and substituting in each case the words “Director-General”:
Sections 2 (definitions of “register of managers and supervisors”, “register of schools” and “register of teachers”); 5; 6 (2); 7 (b); 9 (2) (a); 12 (4); 15; 19 (1) and (2); 22 (1) and (2); 23 (1), (2), (3) and (4); 24; 25 (1) and (2); 26 (2); 27 (1) and (2) and marginal note; 28 (2) and (3); 29; 30 (1); 31 (1) and (2); 32; 33; 34; 36; 37; 38; 39; 41 (1), (2) and (3); 42; 43 (1) and (2); 44 (1) and (2) and marginal note; 45; 46; 47; 48 (1) and (2); 49 (1), (2), (3) and (4) and marginal note; 50; 52; 53 (1), (2), (3) and (4) and marginal note; 54 (1) and (2); 55 (1) and (2) and marginal note; 56 (1), (2) and (3); 57 and marginal note; 58; 59; 60 (2); 62 (1) (c) and (f); 64 and marginal note and the Schedule (Forms 1 to 7).
(2)  Section 5 of the Education Act is amended by deleting the word “Director’s” in the marginal note and substituting the words “Director-General’s”.
(3)  Any reference to the Director of Education in any written law shall be construed as a reference to the Director-General of Education.
