National Service (Amendment) Bill

An Act to amend the National Service Ordinance, 1952, of Malaysia (No. 37 of 1952).
Be it enacted by the President with the advice and consent of the Parliament of Singapore, as follows: —
Short title
1.  This Act may be cited as the National Service (Amendment) Act, 1969.
Amendment of section 2
2.  Section 2 of the National Service Ordinance, 1952 (hereinafter in this Act referred to as “the Ordinance”) is hereby amended by deleting subsection (3) thereof.
Amendment of section 5
3.  Section 5 of the Ordinance is hereby amended by inserting immediately after subsection (2) thereof the following new subsection: —
(3)  The court before which a person is convicted for an offence under subsection (2) of this section may also order such person to present himself for registration for national service on or before a specified date, and any person who, without lawful excuse, fails to present himself for registration in accordance with such order shall be guilty of an offence under this Ordinance and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding fifty dollars for every day during which such person has failed to register himself after such specified date.”.
Amendment of section 9
4.  Section 9 of the Ordinance is hereby amended by inserting immediately after subsection (9) thereof the following new subsection: —
(10)  For the purposes of this section, the expression “medical examination” includes dental examination and the expression “dental examination” shall be construed to include dental treatment and dental surgery.”.
Amendment of section 16K
5.  Section 16K of the Ordinance is hereby amended —
(a)by inserting immediately after the word “service” appearing in paragraph (a) of subsection (1) thereof the expression “or, where such person is selected by the proper authority for officer training, three years’ full-time service”;
(b)by inserting immediately after the words “up to” appearing in the fifth line of subsection (2) thereof the word “either”; and
(c)by inserting immediately after the word “week” where it first occurs in the sixth line of subsection (2) thereof the words “or six hours duty per fortnight or twelve hours duty per month”.
Amendment of section 26
6.  Paragraph (b) of subsection (1) of section 26 of the Ordinance is hereby amended —
(a)by inserting immediately before the word “or” appearing in the second line thereof the words “vigilante corps enrolment notice”; and
(b)by inserting immediately after the expression “VI” appearing in the last line thereof the expression “, VIA”.
