Defamation (Amendment) Bill

An Act to amend the Defamation Act (Chapter 32 of the Revised Edition).
Be it enacted by the President with the advice and consent of the Parliament of Singapore, as follows: —
Short title
1.  This Act may be cited as the Defamation (Amendment) Act, 1979.
Amendment of section 2
2.  Section 2 of the Defamation Act is amended —
(a)by deleting the definition of “broadcasting by means of radiocommunication” and substituting the following: —
“ “broadcasting by means of telecommunication” means publication for general reception by means of a telecommunication;”; and
(b)by inserting, immediately after the definition of “newspaper”, the following definition: —
“ “telecommunication” means any system for the transmission, emission or reception of signs, signals, writings, images and sounds of all kinds by means of radiowaves, wire, cable or other electro-magnetic systems;”.
Amendment of section 3
3.  Section 3 of the Defamation Act is amended by deleting the word “radiocommunication” and substituting the word “telecommunication”.
Amendment of section 13
4.  Section 13 of the Defamation Act is amended —
(a)by deleting the word “radiocommunication” wherever it appears in subsection (1) and substituting in each case the word “telecommunication”; and
(b)by deleting subsection (3) and substituting the following: —
(3)  In this section, “broadcasting station” means any telecommunication station which is authorised by law, or in respect of which a licence is granted under any written law authorising the station, to provide broadcasting services for general reception.”.
