People’s Association (Amendment) Bill

An Act to amend the People’s Association Ordinance, 1960 (No. 35 of 1960).
Be it enacted by the President with the advice and consent of the Parliament of Singapore, as follows: —
Short title and commencement
1.  This Act may be cited as the People’s Association (Amendment) Act, 1965, and shall be deemed to have come into operation on the 1st day of January 1964.
Amendment of Section 10
2.  Section 10 of the People’s Association Ordinance, 1960 is hereby amended —
(a)by deleting subsection (1) thereof and substituting therefor the following: —
(1)  The objects of the Corporation shall be —
(a)the organisation and the promotion of group participation in social, cultural, educational and athletic activities for the people of Singapore in order that they may realise that they belong to a multi-racial community, the interests of which transcend sectional loyalties;
(b)the establishment of such institutions as may be necessary for the purpose of leadership training in order to instil in leaders a sense of national identity and a spirit of dedicated service to a multi-racial community; and
(c)the carrying out of any other activities as are incidental or ancillary to the objects set out in paragraphs (a) and (b) of this subsection.”;
(b)by deleting the words “consisting of members of the Corporation” appearing in paragraph (b) of subsection (2) thereof;
(c)by deleting the word “and” appearing at the end of paragraph (i) of subsection (2) thereof and inserting immediately after the said paragraph the following new paragraph: —
(j)authorise the governing body of any institution established under paragraph (b) of subsection (1) to carry out such activities as are not inconsistent with the objects of the Corporation as set out in subsection (1) and as are in accordance with the Constitution of such institution; and”; and
(d)by re-lettering existing paragraph (j) thereof as paragraph (k).
