Road Traffic (Bicycles) (Exemption) Order 2008

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 142 of the Road Traffic Act, the Minister for Home Affairs hereby makes the following Order:

Citation

1. This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic (Bicycles) (Exemption) Order 2008.

Definitions

2. In this Order —

“bicycle” means a two-wheeled pedal cycle constructed or adapted for use as a means of conveyance but excludes a power-assisted bicycle;

“expressway” has the same meaning as in section 123A(12) of the Act;

“power-assisted bicycle” means a bicycle that is equipped with an electric motor and that may be propelled by muscular power or by the electric motor with which it is equipped, or by both;

“road” means any public road and any other road to which the public has access, and includes any bridge over which a road passes, but excludes an expressway.

Exemption

3. Rule 28 of the Road Traffic Rules (R 20) shall not apply to any person riding a bicycle on the footway of any road within the area specified in the Schedule from 1st August 2008 to 31st January 2009 (both dates inclusive).
