Legal Profession Act
(Chapter 161)
Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) (Amendment) Rules 2005
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(2) of the Legal Profession Act, the Minister for Law, after consultation with the Board of Legal Education, hereby makes the following Rules:
Citation and commencement
1.  These Rules may be cited as the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) (Amendment) Rules 2005 and shall come into operation on 1st August 2005.
Amendment of rule 9
2.  Rule 9 of the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules (R 15) (referred to in these Rules as the principal Rules) is amended —
(a)by deleting the word “with” in paragraph (2);
(b)by inserting, immediately after paragraph (2), the following paragraph:
(2A)  Subject to rules 10 and 11, any citizen or permanent resident of Singapore who, on or after 1st August 2005, is conferred any of the degrees of Bachelor of Laws by any of the institutions of higher learning in Australia specified in the Fourth Schedule shall be a qualified person if he —
(a)has been ranked by that institution of higher learning as being amongst the highest 30%, in terms of academic performance, of the total number of the graduates in the same batch who have been conferred the degree or degrees specified in the Fourth Schedule in respect of that institution of higher learning; and
(b)has obtained the Diploma in Singapore Law.”;
(c)by deleting the words “paragraphs (1)(a) and (2)(a)” in paragraph (3) and substituting the words “paragraphs (1)(a), (2)(a) and (2A)(a)”;
(d)by deleting the words “First or Third Schedule” in paragraph (3) and substituting the words “First, Third or Fourth Schedule”; and
(e)by deleting the word “with” in the rule heading.
Amendment of rule 12
3.  Rule 12 of the principal Rules is amended by deleting the words “First or Third Schedule” and substituting the words “First, Third or Fourth Schedule”.
New Fourth Schedule
4.  The principal Rules are amended by inserting, immediately after the Third Schedule, the following Schedule:
