(Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use)
(Amendment) Rules 2018
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, the Land Transport Authority of Singapore makes the following Rules:
Citation and commencement
1.  These Rules are the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) (Amendment) Rules 2018 and come into operation on 1 February 2018.
Amendment of rule 32
2.  Rule 32 of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) Rules (R 9) is amended by deleting paragraphs (5) and (6) and substituting the following paragraphs:
(5)  Every public service vehicle (other than a trishaw) and goods vehicle registered on or after 1 July 1980 but before 1 February 2018 must be fitted with a pair of reversing lights.
(6)  A public service vehicle (other than a trishaw), or a goods vehicle, that is registered on or after 1 February 2018 must be fitted —
(a)if its overall length does not exceed 6 metres, with one reversing light or a pair of reversing lights; or
(b)in any other case, with a pair of reversing lights.”.
New rule 126A
3.  The Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) Rules are amended by inserting, immediately after rule 126, the following rule:
Sign suggesting motor vehicle to be taxi
126A.—(1)  A motor vehicle which is not a taxi must not have installed, and must not display, on or within it a relevant sign except with the prior written permission of the Registrar.
(2)  In this rule, “relevant sign”, in relation to a motor vehicle, means any sign, notice, decal or label, in printed, electronic or any other form, which consists of —
(a)the word “taxi”, “cab”, “mini‑taxi”, “mini‑cab”, “taxi‑cab” or “cab‑taxi”;
(b)the words “for hire” or “public hire car”;
(c)any other word or combination of other words in any language having the same meaning as the word or words in sub‑paragraph (a) or (b); or
(d)any word, picture, or combination of word and picture that reasonably suggests the motor vehicle is available to take up any passenger who wishes to hire the vehicle on any road or from any parking place or public stand.”.
