Speed limits on roads
2.—(1)  Except as otherwise provided in sub‑paragraphs (2) and (3), the speed of all motor vehicles travelling along any road shall not exceed —
(a)in the case of the roads or parts thereof set out in the First to Sixth Schedules, the speed specified in those Schedules; and

(b)in any other case, 50 kilometres per hour.
(2)  The speed of all motor vehicles travelling along any road in a school zone shall not exceed the speed of 40 kilometres per hour —
(a)on any day —
(i)between 6.30 a.m. and 7.45 a.m. (both times inclusive);
(ii)between 12 noon and 2.30 p.m. (both times inclusive); and
(iii)between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. (both times inclusive); or
(b)when a school event is carried out,
if the traffic sign, set out in diagram 12A in Part I of the Schedule to the Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Rules (R 33), is used to indicate the beginning of the school zone, and the lights attached to that traffic sign are flashing.
(3)  The speed of all motor vehicles travelling along any road in a silver zone must not exceed the speed of —
(a)30 kilometres per hour if the traffic sign set out in diagram 12C in Part I of the Schedule to the Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Rules is used to indicate the beginning of the silver zone; or
(b)40 kilometres per hour if the traffic sign set out in diagram 12B in Part I of the Schedule to the Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Rules is used to indicate the beginning of the silver zone.

(4)  In this paragraph —
“school zone” means any part of a road that is —
(a)adjacent to or in the immediate vicinity of a school; and
(b)between a traffic sign indicating the beginning of a school zone and a traffic sign indicating the end of a school zone;
“silver zone” means any part of a road that is between a traffic sign indicating the beginning of a silver zone and a traffic sign indicating the end of a silver zone.
